Tuesday marked the start of the first ever Malta Under-16 futsal training stage at the National Sports School in Pembroke. The inaugural Futsal Under-16 League, launched this season, is turning out to be a great showcase for youngsters who wish to pursue a career in futsal. It is also allowing the Malta FA futsal coaching staff to monitor the talent of these upcoming players, also in line with the Malta FA strategy which stresses the importance of youth development in futsal. Mark Marlow, the Malta FA Head of Futsal and Beach Soccer, said: “The objective of this training stage is to lay the foundations of the Under-19 national team. This is part of the Malta FA strategy and the long-term plan for the progress of futsal which has already resulted in the introduction of the Under-16 League this season to encourage young players to embrace this project and feature in the plans for our national teams.” These training stages are also helping the young players to enhance their knowledge of futsal regulations. “It is our duty to deliver the right knowledge to these youngstes with regards to the rules of the game and individual and group training, especially in view of the fact that most of them have mostly focused on playing football so far,” Marlow added. “We have lined up a total of 10 training stages between now and June 2022. This process will lead to the introduction of our first ever Under-19 futsal national squad from season 2022/2023.” The Malta FA is planning to launch an Under-19 competition next season which is part of the plans to integrate the current group of players (born 2005) with those born in 2004. UNDER-16 SQUAD FOR TRAINING CAMP Goalkeepers – Etienne Andriy Vella GK (Mellieħa), Jake Huber (Pietà), Matthias Borg (Naxxar), Zeon Montanaro (Swieqi Futsal).Players – Miguel Curmi (Balzan), Jordan Camilleri (Balzan), Karadol Kubilay (Balzan), Shiraz Attard (Floriana), Anis Louati (Mellieħa), Beppe Debono (Swieqi), David Nathan Balzan (Pietà), Ivin Gatt (Pietà), Deyan Pace (Pietà), Kieran Debono (Mtarfa Dingli), Collin Sammut (San Ġwann), Matthias Fenech (San Ġwann), Jean Cole Attard (Naxxar), Glen Gauci (Naxxar), Aaron Stagno (Sliema), Zack Calleja (Sliema).
