Last weekend's Match Day Five of the BOV 2021/22 Premier League produced plenty of action, with Hibernians being held for the first time this season by Santa Lucia, Hamrun's return to winning ways, Mosta's first league win and an unexpected Gudja win over Valletta. Birkirkara's Federico Falcone is on an impressive goalscoring streak, while Roderick Briffa reached another impressive milestone.

1 – Although it was only the third time they met in an official encounter, Francisco Farias’ goal was the very first one ever scored on behalf of Santa Lucia against Hibernians. Due to the pandemic, the match was only played once during the previous two seasons, with Hibernians winning 2-0 (2019/20) and 3-0 last season. This also means that Santa Lucia won their first ever point in history against the current league leaders.

4 – Four players, Sunday Akinbule (two goals for Mosta), Hibernians defender Leandro Almeida, Omar Elouni and Dejan Vukovic (both Sliema Wanderers) all found the net for the very first time in their Malta Premier Division careers.

5 – Federico Falcone of Birkirkara has now found the net in each 2021/22 Premier League match so far, five goals, one during each Match Day. As the Argentinian striker also scored in Birkirkara’s last fixture of the 2020/21 season, on 6 March against Tarxien Rainbow (3-0, 1 goal), he has now scored in six consecutive Premier Division matches. At top level in Malta, Mario Azzopardi still holds the record, established more than sixty years ago. During season 1960/61, the Valletta striker scored in ten consecutive matches. In the Premier Division, three players share the record with finding the net in nine consecutive matches. Michael Mifsud with Sliema Wanderers was the first one during season 2000/01, followed by Daniel Nwoke (Msida St Joseph, seasons 2004/05 and 2005/06) and Danijel Bogdanovic with Marsaxlokk during season 2006/07.

7 -– Seven players made their seasonal debut in the Premier Division: Pedro Augusto Mota de Lima (Balzan), Rowen Muscat and Sheldon MacKay (Valletta), David Cassar (Sliema Wanderers), Andreas Vella (Sta Lucia), Aidan Friggieri (Gudja United) and Eugenio Rebenja (Floriana)

7 – The last time Mosta beat Balzan in the Premier Division was nearly exactly seven years ago, on 21 September 2014. On that day, Mosta beat Balzan 1-0, thanks to a Bojan Kaljevic goal, who was yesterday playing for the opposite side with Balzan. Since this day, both teams met 15 times with Balzan winning 12 and three draws. Last year, Mosta did beat Balzan, but this was a match in the 2020/21 FA Trophy (3-1).

50 – Two players made their 50th appearance in the Premier League: Nicholas Pulis (Sta Lucia) on Saturday night against Hibernians (40 for Valletta, 10 for Santa Lucia) and yesterday against Mosta. The Under-21 international made 26 of these in the colours of St Andrews and 24 with his current club.

200 – Hamrun Spartans’ second goal against Floriana, scored from the penalty spot by Franklin Sasere, was their 200th goal against Floriana, in 193 matches, counting all MFA competitions (both league and Knock Out). The first one was scored over 110 years ago, to be precise on 15 April 1911 in the Semi-Final of the National Ground Cup (3-3).

450 – In the match against Balzan, Mosta midfielder Roderick Briffa played his 450th match in the Premier Division. The 40-year-old midfielder made his first MPL appearance way back in season 1998/99 and played in the Premier Division, apart from his current club, for Birkirkara, Pieta’ Hotspurs, Sliema Wanderers, Valletta and Gzira United. Only four players have played more MPL games: Mario Muscat (529), Andrew Cohen (508), David Camilleri (484) and Gilbert Agius (453).
