Premier stats: Fontanella in the limelight

Mario Fontanella's goals have been included in this week's BOV Premier Division statistical overview, as the Italian born striker reached a few milestones with his hattrick against Sirens. The Valletta striker scored five of the six goals scored by the Citizens so far this season. Other players in the limelight are Emerson Marcelina, Francis Avoce, Haris Dilaver and coach Stefano Sanderra 1 – Valletta’s Italan striker, Mario Fontanella, netted the first hat-trick of the seaons in Lilywhites’ 3-1 win over Sirens. He also became the first player to take the match ball home after this new rule was introduced before the beginning of the season. In the top division he also scored another two hat-tricks which was against Tarxien Rainbows (December 2018) and Balzan (February 2020).40 – The inclusion of Bosnian midfielder, Haris Daliver, in Valletta’s starting line-up was the 40th different nationality in the Premier League.50 – Fontanella’s opening goal during Valletta’s 3-1 win against Sirens was the 50th of the winning teams.50 – American forward Francis Avoce of Sirens bagged the 50th goal at the Tony Bezzina Stadium. He scored with his first touch on his first appearance in the top flight in the 87th minute he reduced the deficit during the 3-1 loss against Valletta.60 – Midfielder, Dexter Xuereb, became the 60th scorer of the season. He equalized for Santa Lucia in the 91st minute against Mosta (2-2). His goal was also the 10th notched in stoppage time this season. Incidentally the latest goal was also scored against Mosta by Birkirkara’s Federico Falcone in 94th minute (3-0).70 – The 3-0 victory over Sliema Wanderers was Stefano Sanderra’s 70th match in charge of Hibernians in the Premier League. The record of the Italian coach reads: 45 wins, 12 draws and 13 defeats.90 – Mario Fontanella reached the 90-goal mark after hitting a hat-trick in Valletta’s 3-1 win against Sirens. The Italian forward netted his first back in September 2015 for Floriana when he broke the deadlock from the penalty spot against Qormi at the Hibernians Stadium. He went on to score 51 goals for the Greens before joining the Citizens.100 – Malta National under-21 player Adam Bradshaw became the 100th substitute to enter the field of play in the last quarter of an hour. He replaced Marcus Grima in the 90th minute during Balzan’s 2-1 defeat against Floriana.150 - The match against Gzira United was Emerson Marcelina's 150th in the Malta Premier Division. The lanky 30-year-old Brazilian made his debut in the MPL for Floriana during season 2014/15 and also played for Birkirkara, Tarxien Rainbows, Nadur Youngsters in Gozo, before joining his current club Hamrun Spartans in 2020.180 – Santa Lucia’s Jamie Zerafa was shown the 180th yellow card of the season. He was booked in the 94th minute for time-wasting by match official Alex Johnson against Mosta (2-2).250 – Santa Lucia’s midfielder Kieran Xuereb, became the 250th substitute when he came on for Vito Plut in the 92nd minute against Mosta (2-2).
