Birkirkara and Mġarr United will aim to pick up where they left off and resume their quest for the women’s championship as the league resumes after the winter recess. Matchday 9 will be played between Tuesday and Wednesday after the MFA competitions were postponed forward to two weeks due to the recent spike in the pandemic cases on the Maltese islands.

Birkirkara and Mġarr head into this week’s games sharing top spot with 19 points after an impressive run that saw the Stripes producing the best scoring record with 34 goals while the Greens remain the only side to register a clean sheet in every single. Such numbers are a testament of the quality that these two teams are deploying on the field week in week out.

Melania Bajada’s Birkirkara will face Kirkop United where the Stripes might hand debut to their newly-signed Canadian forward Patricia Lamanna. The Toronto-born player, 24, is at the back of Spanish spell at Intercity Femenino after various experiences in North American football.

In the first round, Birkirkara defeated Kirkop 2-0 thanks to goals from their club top scorer Alishia Sultana and youth Sara Saliba.

Mġarr, on their part, will face a tricky test in Raiders Lija. Under the guidance of Michael Mangion, Mġarr have forged a solid title challenge, in particular after their goalless stalemate against Birkirkara and their comfortable victory over Swieqi United.

While they are looking to bolster their squad following the long-term injury of hard-working midfielder Amber Grech, Mġarr’s hopes bank on the goals of league record scorer Francesca Chircop with 8 goals and club captain Brenda Borg, who has scored six goals so far.

In the other game, Swieqi will be eyeing only a victory to bounce back from their Birkirkara defeat back in December. The Oranges, who will be coached by Billy Mock after replacing the outgoing Nenad Tomic, have slipped into fourth with 10 points – and a game in hand.

On the other hand, Mtarfa are bottom of the table with just one point to show for their efforts – recorded in their draw against league debutants San Ġwann, who will be serving a bye in this Matchday.
