The Hibernians and Malta goalkeeper Mario Musact broke new ground on Saturday 11 January 2014 when his team played Mosta. That match marked his 485th appearance in the top echelons of Maltese football, surpassing the previous limit of David Camilleri of Hamrun Spartans, who is also a former Malta national team player. Camilleri donned the jersey of five other teams Unlike the Spartans midfielder, Muscat set this record when turning out for only one team, Hibernians FC, in a period spanning 21 seasons. The Paolites' goalkeeper made his debut on the 8th September 1993 under coach Brian Talbot when his team drew 1-1 against Rabat Ajax.During his career the player and his team were under the stewardship of another four coaches. These were Mark Miller, Robert Gatt, Michael Woods and Branko Nisevic.Muscat's contribution to Maltese football was marked by a posse of honours, which, besides League and FA Trophy prizes, include the 'Player of the Year' award in 1997-98, the second time this honour was bestowed on a goalkeeper after that of Alfred Debono of Valletta FC in 1972/73.Muscat, is now approaching another landmark - that of 500 appearances in our top division. One sincerely augurs that he continues playing regularly so that this figure will be reached in his team's first league match next season.
